Punyeta Hooded Sweater

Beyond the Word

In Filipino culture, punyeta is an expression often used when someone’s frustrated or agitated. But if we trace its roots, the word doesn’t actually exist in Spanish (aka our colonizer’s) dictionaries. The closest term is “puño,” which means a closed fist. That might explain why punyeta hits as hard as a punch when you say it. There’s no clear record of how the word took on its meaning, but it’s often mistaken as a softer version of puta (whore), like a “little whore.”

Among our culture’s curse words, punyeta is obviously seen as offensive. But as we turn this word into art and merch, we see an opportunity. As women, we reclaim punyeta to express emotions that society tells us to suppress. Instead of letting it sting when it’s thrown at us, we wear it as a badge of defiance. If someone calls us punyeta to put us down, we’ll take that word and use it to declare that we won’t shrink, that we’re done playing by society’s rules of “quiet”, “submissive”, and “nice.” Reclaiming punyeta is our way of flipping the script—it’s not an insult if we choose to own it. So, call me punyeta? Damn right I am—and I’m powerful because of it.
