In Support of LGBTQIA+ Liberation

We're thrilled to expand our collection of liberation stickers with new designs from Bahaghari Philippines! Maraming salamat to our Kapatids at Bahaghari for allowing us to share their incredible sticker designs across the diaspora. 

Stickers are 3-inch custom-cut printed on a thick vinyl with a matte finish. Designed by Arri Samsico and Whenzy Jumapao.

Proceeds

Beyond the Word

Malakas, Matapang, Palaban—Strong, Fierce, Fighter. These qualities are often tied to masculinity in Filipino culture, with women traditionally expected to be mahinhin—modest and passive. But Filipina women have long defied these narrow expectations. From Gabriela Silang, who led a revolt against Spanish colonizers, to Teresa Magbanua, a revolutionary who fought in all three resistance movements against the Philippines’ major colonizers, Filipinas have shown that strength and bravery are deeply rooted in our history. Filipina women have fought, organized, and led with the same fierceness traditionally reserved for men.

So here’s a reminder to Filipina women and our queer kapatids: we’re strong because we endure, we’re fierce because we resist, and we’re fighters because we never back down from what’s right. These words no longer just belong to men—they belong to us too. Our power has always been there, even when it wasn’t recognized. Now, we’re making sure it’s undeniable.

Beyond the Word

The design and anting-anting (amulet) of this sweater is straightforward. It is an image of a person embracing themselves completely with the words, mahal kita around it. The ambiguity of who this prayer is being said to (is it you, the reader, or you the wearer?) mirrors the deep understanding that unconditional love requires us to acknowledge our wholeness and that of others. For extra support, we have added, “sakto lang, hindi nagkulang” (meaning just right, nothing less) on the inner sleeve specifically for the wearer. We want to remind you that you are made exactly right and nothing about you was ever missing. You have always been whole. 

In this system, we are taught to focus more on our lack. Systems of oppression will amplify our shadows, the parts of ourselves that are made to hide because of fear, shame, rejection, or whatever else so that we can disconnect from our whole sense of being and instead comply with a false source of a higher power.

This is why to say, “mahal kita”, is such a powerful prayer and spell. The Tagalog double meaning of mahal says, I love you, and I value your wholehearted existence in my life. This is why people say love is revolutionary. It liberates and affirms all our authentic ways of being.

Makulay at iba pa (atbp) means colourful and many more in Tagalog. We are a collective of LGBTQ+ Filipinos in so-called Toronto centred around honouring our roots while building and strengthening community.

Ingat palagi translates to Take care always. The front design reads "Ingatan natin ang Isa't Isa" meaning "let's take care of each other."

"The relaunch of Ingat Palagi by Pinay Collection and Makulay atbp reaffirms our fierce love for queer and trans kin. This new Ingat Palagi (take care always) tee is weaved with the colours of the trans flag. This merch launch highlights the tender love and community care queer and trans people foster among one another in our resistance against ongoing transphobia rooted in colonial and imperial violence.

The weaving pattern, or mga habi, calls us to remember the strong resistance of queer and trans people then and now.

As queer and trans Filipinos in the diaspora, we are privileged to be able to uplift, protect, and take care of ourselves and each other because of the revolutionary and liberatory work of those before us. We honour the babaylans who resisted the Spanish colonization and beyond, including queer and trans revolutionaries, healers and caretakers across nations and cultures who remain unnamed because of colonial erasure.

Today, the spirit of resistance against colonial and imperial violence is fiercely shepherded by queer and trans kababayans back home, as well as the Indigenous, Black and racialized queer liberation movement on Turtle Island and across the world.”

‘Ang Pride ay Magpakailanman’ (Pride is Forever) is a community zine curated by queer and trans Filipinos in so-called Toronto, Canada. Created during playshops in January 2023, the zines explore the daily joy and healing that happens in our every day.
