Malakas, Matapang, Palaban: Strong, Fierce, Fighter. This hoodie is in honor of the revolutionary Pinays who have fearlessly fought and continue to fight for justice and liberation.

The design on the back of our hoodie represents Filipino resistance, with a raised fist symbolizing those on the front lines, and blooming flowers as a reminder of the tender love and care that fuels our collective action, honoring all forms of Pinay resistance.

This design is a radical statement for all of us who've been overlooked and never been thought of as being malakas, matapang, and palaban, despite our inherent strength, bravery, and unyielding fighting spirit.

Malakas means strong. Matapang means brave. Palaban means a fighter.

This design is in honour of the strong Pina/xys whose love and care help build the society we all rely on. It is in honour of the brave Pina/xys who continue to speak up and help others find their voice. It is in honour of the Pina/xys who fought and are fighting for our liberation and rights as a community, as a nation.

Most importantly, this design is for all of us who have never been called malakas, matapang and palaban despite our bold strength, bravery and fighting spirit.

"Maarte is my childhood nickname. Everyone in my family calls me Maarte because I'm always too extra about everything. I would not go out without having my hair fixed. I would not wear something that is not ironed. I'd always wear some cheap but nice smelling kid's perfume. My family didn't have much growing up, but my Nanay and Lola always made sure I feel good about myself even as a young kid. I'm Maarte because of them. I've always been bullied by people around me - my family, classmates, friends. The word Maganda is something I never really heard people say about me. But who says I can't say it about myself? Beyond the Word

The design and anting wanting (amulet) of this sweater is straightforward. It is an image of a person embracing themselves completely with the words, mahal kita around it. The ambiguity of who this prayer is being said to (is it you, the reader, or you the wearer?) mirrors the deep understanding that unconditional love requires us to acknowledge our wholeness and that of others. For extra support, we have added, “sakto lang, hindi nagkulang” on the inner sleeve specifically for the wearer. We want to remind you that you are made exactly right and nothing about you was ever missing. You have always been whole. 

In this system, we are taught to focus more on our lack. Systems of oppression will amplify our shadows, the parts of ourselves that are made to hide because of fear, shame, rejection, or whatever else so that we can disconnect from our whole sense of being and instead comply with a false source of a higher power.

This is why to say, “mahal kita”, is such a powerful prayer and spell. The Tagalog double meaning of mahal says, I love you, and I value your wholehearted existence in my life. This is why people say love is revolutionary. It liberates and affirms all our authentic ways of being.
