Artist Statement

"When I think of Panahon and its symbolism in Philippine culture, I am reminded of the people most impacted by climate and seasonal changes—the peasant communities. Unlike many of us in the diaspora, the motherland doesn’t experience four seasons; however, it endures extreme weather changes, such as intense heat and devastating typhoons. When these events occur, fisherfolk and farming communities are often the hardest hit.

This design honors these very communities, which continue to be the backbone of Filipino culture despite the escalating risks and harassment brought about by climate change and corporate exploitation. The artwork envisions a future where peasant communities see Philippine land and water flourishing under their care. This vision is symbolized by rice plants standing disproportionately tall, sampaguita flowers blooming from the sun, and a fisherfolk resting at ease, admiring the environment they help nurture.

The phrase Atin ang Pinas ("The Philippines is ours") is inscribed on the bangka (boat), representing the sovereignty and enduring fight of the Filipino people against foreign powers seeking to claim Philippine land and waters."

$1 from every merch sold will be donated to PAMALAKAYA, a National Federation of Small Fisherfolk Organizations in the Philippines, uniting the Filipino fishers towards a genuine fisheries reform. 

About Pinoys on Parliament & Kabangka

Founded in 2018, Pinoys on Parliament, also known as POP, is a yearly national leadership conference for young Filipino/a/x-Canadians held in Ottawa, Ontario. POP is organized by Kabangka - a youth-led and youth-centred leadership organization that unites young Filipino/a/x-Canadians to support Filipino/a/x-Canadian representation in a variety of sectors.

• Our designs are heat pressed onto fabric. To ensure they last a long time, please only wash and tumble dry inside out. If you need to iron, only iron on the backside of the clothing.
