“Makibakla” is a powerful and playful reimagining of the phrase “maki-baka” (join the struggle), infused with the word “bakla” - a uniquely Filipino term that refers to queer identity, often encompassing effeminate gay men, trans femmes, and gender-nonconforming folks, though it continues to evolve in meaning and reclamation.
Similar to the term "makibeki", one that's been reclaimed in the Philippines contextualizing the similar context of struggle in queer liberation, at its core, makibakla is a queer call to action that can be interpreted as:
-
“Join the queer struggle!”
-
“Be proudly bakla as resistance!”
- “Fight back in the spirit of bakla joy and defiance!”
It blends activism (maki-baka) with queerness (bakla) to celebrate how being bakla is itself an act of resistance in a society that often polices gender and sexuality.
Collaboration with Kimmortal x Sac Filipinx LGBTQIA+ x Pinay Collection
We’re beyond proud to announce a powerful collaboration rooted in art, activism, and ancestral resistance. Kimmortal, a queer, non-binary Filipinx artist known for their genre-defying music and unapologetic storytelling, joins forces with Sacramento Filipinx LGBTQIA+ and Pinay Collection to uplift the call: Makibakla - to join the struggle through queer joy, resistance, and visibility.
In a world that continues to erase, tokenize, or criminalize our identities, Makibakla is more than a phrase - it’s a reclamation. It’s a rallying cry that says:
To be bakla is to resist.
To be queer is to be powerful.
To live fully and visibly is revolutionary.
This collaboration bridges community organizing and cultural expression, honoring our roots while dreaming forward. Together, we create space for QT Filipinx folks to heal, create, and thrive in all our complexity.
About the Artist

Their notable sync highlights include their single "This Dyke” appearing on “The L Word: Generation Q” and “Animal Pride”. This past year Kim’s original music for “Sort Of” (out now on HBO, CBC) won Best Original song for Canadian Screen Awards and their music video “Blue and Orange” received Best Music Video at Disorient Asian American film festival.
Kimmortal’s newest release will be their EP “SUNNIEST OF DAYS” dropping June 11 featuring artists Shad K, Super Duty Tough Work, and Nimkish with music produced with their bandmates. This release will be followed by a North American Tour this summer.
