Product Description
Sizing: 2.5 x 2.5 inches
In the Philippines, hibiscus or gumamela is part of everyday life, used for play, home remedies, and small acts of care within communities. In Sudan, the same flower known as karkade is prepared and shared in homes and gatherings, carrying hospitality and connection. In both countries, hibiscus is woven into daily life, shaped by the ways ordinary people nurture community.
These Hibiscus Coconut Shell Keychains, handcrafted by Mindanaoan makers in Kidapawan, Cotabato, carry the fierce spirit of resistance across seas. The hibiscus (known in the Philippines as gumamela) is a familiar and beloved flower, often found blooming in front yards and school gardens. Made from reclaimed coconut shells, an abundant and sacred material known as the “Tree of Life,” each piece is a reminder that art can be both weapon and witness.
Etched with the words “Free Sudan”, these keychains stand as an offering of solidarity from the Philippines to Sudan, a bridge between peoples who have long fought against empire, dictatorship, and the hunger for liberation that binds us all
