These Coconut Shell Parol keychain carry with them the warmth of the tropics and the artistry of Mindanaoan makers from Kidapawan, Cotabato. Each pair is from reclaimed coconut shell, an abundant and symbolic material in the Philippines, long revered as the “Tree of Life.”

Its dried petals are brewed into a tangy red tea shared during celebrations and gatherings, symbolizing unity and hospitality. Over time, hibiscus has also become a quiet emblem of resistance: during the 2019 revolution, karkadeh was served to protesters in the streets, sustaining them through the struggle and embodying the people’s collective strength and hope for freedom.

Born from the aftermath of World War II, Jeeps, or Public Utility Jeepneys, have become a cultural icon and a vital, affordable transportation mode for over 40% of commuters in Metro Manila and many provinces across the Philippines. Dubbed the hari ng kalsada (king of the road), jeepneys traverse routes that limited transportation options don't cover, providing an indispensable service. Along with jeepneys comes their art, particularly their hand-painted signage.

The exact origins of jeepney signages are not well-documented, but they are believed to draw deep inspiration from the letter paintings on kalesas (horse-drawn carriages) and the carts of roaming sorbeteros (ice cream vendors) in the streets of Metro Manila. These eye-catching signages serve not only to provide directions but also as a form of artistic expression - a truly remarkable piece of Philippine culture.

The design's baybayin writing translates to Free Palestine.

This design draws its inspiration from the story of the Palestinian crocodile extinction, a tale steeped in colonial violence, exploitation, and dispossession. According to an article from the Institute for Palestine Studies, the extinction of these crocodiles is deeply entangled with the brutal histories of colonial resource extraction, racialized labour exploitation, and the displacement of indigenous populations. The last known Palestinian crocodile's demise, officially marked in 1935 by a Zionist zoologist, symbolizes the destructive impact of colonialism on both human and non-human life.

This Palestinian narrative resonates deeply with the Tapar revolution in Iloilo, Philippines. During this uprising, Spanish colonizers executed Babaylans—gender fluid Indigenous spiritual leaders—and desecrated their bodies by feeding them to crocodiles, an act intended to mock and undermine Indigenous reverence for these creatures. By featuring the crocodile on this t-shirt, we honour the intertwined struggles against colonial oppression, standing in solidarity with all who resist erasure and fight for liberation.

• Like any handmade art, these hand-painted jeepney signages may have minor flaws such as chipped paint, smudges, or small dents due to the nature of the craft and the environment in which they are created. Each sign is manually dried in outdoor spaces, making them naturally exposed to the elements during creation.

• Made from PVC/Sintra plastic board, these signages should be kept out of direct sunlight. 

• The actual colour of the signage may appear lighter or darker than in photos due to lighting conditions or screen resolution differences.

The Cultural Significance of Jeepneys 

Born from the aftermath of World War II, Jeeps, or Public Utility Jeepneys, have become a cultural icon and a vital, affordable transportation mode for over 40% of commuters in Metro Manila and many provinces across the Philippines. Dubbed the hari ng kalsada (king of the road), jeepneys traverse routes that limited transportation options don't cover, providing an indispensable service. Along with jeepneys comes their art, particularly their hand-painted signage.

The exact origins of jeepney signages are not well-documented, but they are believed to draw deep inspiration from the letter paintings on kalesas (horse-drawn carriages) and the carts of roaming sorbeteros (ice cream vendors) in the streets of Metro Manila. These eye-catching signages serve not only to provide directions but also as a form of artistic expression - a truly remarkable piece of Philippine culture.

Artist Statement

Catherine Hernandez is the award-winning author and screenwriter of Scarborough the book and film, as well as a watercolour and digital artist. Her artwork centres on depictions of joy as resistance.

• Non-Bunny Series, inspired by Catherine's niece who identifies as "non-bunny" (their special term for non-binary). Here, fashionable bunnies based on actual pet rabbits exhibit the dignity and flare of the queer/trans community.
