This shirt is a tribute to that resistance: to the bricks thrown at Stonewall, to the legacy of Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, all the black and brown trans beings who fought, and to the fierce spirit of every trans and queer life taken too soon.

The front design features bricks, an ode to the first Pride riot, intertwined with chrysanthemums and poppies, symbolizing the birth flowers of Filipino trans woman Jennifer Laude and Black trans icon Marsha P. Johnson.

On the back, we honor the memory of Jennifer Laude, Ebeng Mayor, Lenie Perez Rivas, Estee Saway, Tats Tumicad, Cindy Jones Torres, Junjie Bangkiao, Mhelody Polan Bruno, Madonna Nierra, and Jessa Remiendo - Filipino trans and queer folks whose lives were cut short by state violence, neglect, and hate.

The Babae Barong Tote pays tribute to the women who get called names imposed on them by society—names that sought to silence, but instead became seeds of strength and reclaiming power over the words meant to wound.

• A barong is a traditional Filipino formal shirt. Our barong tote is crafted from a mix of Jusilyn fabric—a blend of silk and polyester—and piña (pineapple) fibers.
• The print, designed by Pinay Collection founder Jovie Galit, is fully embroidered onto the fabric by our partner artisan in Laguna, Philippines, who also sources, sews and dyes the bags.
• Totes are double-lined ensuring it's not sheer and can protect your items.

Her first novel, Scarborough, won the Jim Wong-Chu Award for the unpublished manuscript and was a finalist for several awards including Canada Reads 2022. She wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of Scarborough, which was nominated for 11 Canadian Screen Awards and won 8 including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Her second novel, Crosshairs, was shortlisted for the Toronto Book Award and made several Best-Of lists of 2020. Her third novel, The Story of Us, was an instant national bestseller and was selected for the One Book Peterborough, Kitchener and Simon Fraser University. She is currently working on a few television projects. Her fourth novel, Behind You, about a young girl growing up in Scarborough when a serial killer was at large, was published this year and was an instant national bestseller.
